AI has definitely changed the way we conduct business. It speeds things up, it can process massive amounts of data, and in certain rolesโespecially high-volume or transactional jobsโit can be a helpful tool. In fact, I used an AI tool to generate the picture for this post.
But when it comes to hiring ๐ด๐ข๐ญ๐ฆ๐ด๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ญ๐ฆ, especially the ones who will make or break your revenue goals, AI creates almost as many problems as it solves.
It canโt spot the intangibles: grit, curiosity, resilience, self-awareness, emotional intelligence. It doesnโt pick up on someoneโs natural charisma or how they build rapport. It just screens for keywords and cookie-cutter career paths. Thatโs why great sales talent gets filtered out before a human ever sees them.
The same goes for most traditional recruiters. Many do a decent job checking boxesโindustry, experience, titlesโbut few truly ๐ถ๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ด๐ต๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ what makes a salesperson succeed. Fewer still have actually built, led, and coached sales teams themselves.
Thatโs whatโs missing in a lot of sales hiring today. AI and inexperienced recruiters can get you candidates. But it takes someone whoโs led salespeople to ๐ช๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ต๐ช๐ง๐บ future rainmakers and know who can actually perform, not just interview well.
If you want to build a real sales force, stop relying on tech to do the vetting. Use it to assist. But make sure a seasoned sales leader is making the decisions.
