5 Biggest Mistakes Sales Candidates Make During Video Interviews

Writer's picture: Dan FlynnDan Flynn

Video interviews are the new normal in the business world, and how candidates present themselves virtually can make or break their chances of landing a role. Throughout the many video interviews I've conducted with candidates, I’ve noticed some common mistakes...and they’re all easily avoidable with a little preparation.

Here is my list of the top 5 mistakes sales candidates make during video interviews along with my advice as to how to avoid them:

#𝟭 𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Logging in late, being unfamiliar with navigating the video conference app, or not performing basic research on the company they're interviewing with screams, “I didn’t prepare.” Sales is all about being proactive and ready. Test your tech, show up early, and know your audience.

#𝟮 𝗨𝗻𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲

A cluttered background, bad lighting, or dressing like it’s casual Friday doesn’t give off “sales professional” vibes. Find a clean, quiet space, use good lighting, and dress as if you’re meeting in person. Trust me, first impressions count!

#𝟯 𝗟𝗼𝘄 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆

If you’re monotone, seem disinterested, or looking off at a second screen instead of the camera, it’s a big red flag. Sales is about building energy and rapport—look into the camera, bring enthusiasm to the interview, and make the conversation dynamic.

#𝟰 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗧𝗼𝗼 𝗠𝘂𝗰𝗵

Sales isn’t about you; it’s about solving problems. If you only talk about your achievements without connecting them to the company’s goals, you’re missing the mark. Show them how you can help them.

#𝟱 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴

Cutting off the interviewer or giving long-winded answers shows you’re not listening—and sales is all about listening. Pause, let them finish, and keep your responses focused and concise.

Video interviews are an opportunity to sell yourself, just like you’d sell a product or service. A little preparation and intentionality go a long way.
